The company made the announcement in a blog post. Google Health created a mild sensation during an initial public display at the 2008 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society February trade show in Orlando, Fla. It proceeded to rack up a score of big-name early associates, including providers Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; retail drug outlets Walgreens and Wal-Mart stores; and national laboratory service provider Quest Diagnostics. But Google’s platform was in a battle with rival software giant Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash., whose HealthVault platform was launched earlier, in late 2007. “Now, with a few years of experience, we’ve observed that Google Health is not having the broad impact that we hoped it would,” Google said in its farewell announcement. The company said it would provide a way for people to download their health data through Jan. 1, 2013. “Any data that remains in Google Health after that point will be permanently deleted.”
