SIIA Legislative Update – Healthcare Reform – 11/04/09
House Health Bill Support in Question – “Undecideds” Still Raising Serious Concerns
SIIA’s Government Relations Staff were invited to participate in a strategy session this afternoon with House Republican Leadership and learned that there is yet a clear committed majority of support for the current House reform bill. The lack of removal of the most harmful and contentious provisions coupled with yesterday’s election results which many are regarding as an all out mandate against the current healthcare reform bill, have kept many of those uncommitted Members to stay that way. House Democrat Leadership is meeting individually with each of these Members to gage their positions as well as what it would take to gain their support.
A vote is expected no earlier than Saturday the 7th, but slip until at least early next week if there is still not a clear majority of support.
Contact Your Representative Immediately – They Need to Hear Our Message
With each passing day, swing House Members hear from more and more people how harmful the current House bill is. The self-insurance industry needs to be a part of this effort. If enacted, this bill would destroy the private, Employer-Based Healthcare System, all but ending the entire healthcare marketplace for the self-insurance industry.
We ask all SIIA members, all those in the self-insurance industry and all those receiving employer-sponsored coverage, to contact their Member of the House and relay the message to them how harmful this bill actually is.
While we insist that all House Members be contacted no matter what their perceived position is on the bill, we have compiled a target list of House Members we believe are still undecided that absolutely need to be contacted. If you have any connection to their Congressional District (live-in, work-in, cover-lives in…) you need to call their office.
Attached to this notification are SIIA developed talking points to be relayed to Representatives.
