Congressional Calendar for 2010 Legislative Session
The House of Representatives adjourned for the year on December 16 and is not expected to reconvene until early January. The Senate is expected to adjourn after completing action on the pending health reform bill, possibly before Christmas, although there is considerable uncertainty about the outcome of this debate. The congressional schedule in the early weeks of 2010 is likely to be structured around efforts to send a final health reform bill to the President’s desk. Once the 2010 session is underway, the House and Senate are planning to take the following recess periods next year:
- Presidents’ Day Recess: February 13-21
- Easter Recess: March 27-April 11
- Memorial Day Recess: May 29-June 6
- July 4th Recess: July 3-11
- August Recess: August 7-September 12
House leaders have established October 8 as the target date for adjournment, but Senate leaders have not announced a target date for ending the 2010 session. In recent years, Congress has rarely completed its legislative business by October. However, with the mid-term elections scheduled for November 2, congressional leaders will face strong pressure to give rank-and-file members several weeks to campaign in their states and districts before the November 2010 elections.
