The Phia Group Forum in Boston last week was a great event based on all of the feedback we received. Thank you to all of the speakers and sponsors who made this happen. We spent a year setting this up and thankfully it went even better than expected. Over 200 people from our industry got to learn about immediate savings opportunities while also partying on the duck tour and drinking Phia martinis. We will have all Forum materials available soon. Thank you.

A few thoughts while I sit on a plane to Vegas to speak at a forum in the morning. Regardless of what many may think, employers will not stop health insurance coverage for their employees. It didn’t happen here in Massachusetts, even though employers – including Phia – could have. Why didn’t we stop offering health insurance even though it was cheaper to pay into the exchange? Because it is a benefit that is important to employees! Employers need employee benefits to recruit and retain top workers. (more…)

Pretty amazing story – just got off the phone with a member who had to go to an Arizona facility (whose name I won’t mention in case I get sued!!!) and he said that when he sat in the waiting room for 2 hours, he noticed one woman who kept on bringing the patients in and the same woman kept bringing the patients out. When he finally met with this same woman, she specifically said to him that this facility is an out of network facility. They are an out of network facility with every single insurance carrier. Before they would see him (it was a trauma claim), he would have to sign a document agreeing to reimburse the facility the difference between what was charged by them and what would be paid by the plan. He was told that they would not be able to tell him the charges ahead of time!!! They then asked him how much he could afford a month. He said he could pay $100 a month and he had to sign the document right then and there. They did that with every single patient that walked through the door. When he went back there to take the cast off his hand, a woman came in for 10 minutes (a nurse’s assistant), took pliers, broke the cast off and then he left. He said he could have done that at home. That particular 20 minute session at this particular facility was billed at $8,500 to the plan. The plan agreed to reimburse $1,200 as usual and customary and the facility balanced billed the patient for $7,300. He is still getting letters and phone calls from creditors today. This is the problem with healthcare in our country.

After spending much of the past 4 months on the road speaking at various conferences, one thing is clear – people are freaking about health care reform. Not the fact that it is happening but that so many issues are unresolved and answers are unclear. Many of the details are just not known yet and it is frustrating to everyone. I am still waiting to hear the true meaning of “grandfathering”!!!! What is it? (more…)

After spending much of the past 4 months on the road speaking at various conferences, one thing is clear -people are freaking about about Health Care Reform. Not the fact that it is happening but that so many issues are unresolved and answers are unclear. Many of the details are just not known yet and it is frustrating to everyone. I am still waiting to hear the true meaning of “grandfathering”!!!! What is it? Luckily, we here at Phia have had the opportunity to truly digest all of the info out there and we will be hosting a free webinar on the ‘Effects of Healthcare Reform on the Self-Insured Community’ on Wednesday May 19. I urge you to listen in. The main factor that hasn’t been addressed with reform is the rising costs of healthcare and that is where our industry can make the difference. We need to begin innovating and collaborating now and this will be fueled by The Phia Group Forum in Boston next month. Let’s face the fact that Health Care Reform is here and take the lead in promoting cost savings that this industry desperately needs. I am looking forward to seeing many of you next month. Thanks for reading!
